The Hetrick-Martin Institute stands as a beacon of hope and support for LGBTQ+ youth in Manhattan. In 1979, the compassionate vision of life partners Dr. Emery Hetrick and Dr. Damien Martin led to the creation of the Institute for the Protection of Lesbian and Gay Youth (IPLGY). Their heartfelt response to the plight of a homeless 15-year-old gay youth marked the inception of an organization dedicated to providing vital support. Renamed Hetrick-Martin Institute in 1988, this institution remains unwavering in its commitment to empowering LGBTQIA+ youth aged 13 to 24 and their families. Through a comprehensive range of direct services and referrals, Hetrick-Martin Institute fosters healthy youth development, embodying excellence in youth services. The Metropolitan Community Church offers a spiritual home for New York City’s LGBTQIA+ Community, and it’s open to all! “Our dream, and the dream of the Gospel, is that people from all walks of life will live together in the right relationship and share their gifts, talents and resources,” they say. Today, MCCNY has an active congregation of over 500 members. The organization supports a number of ministries to the poor, hungry and homeless, both locally and globally. “Many of us left our original churches when it became clear that, as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer Christians, we were unwelcome. Some of our churches condemned us, some excommunicated us, some ignored us,” they said. Now, they’ve created a space for people of all stripes to feel at home, and to practice their faith in a community built on tolerance and understanding.
