The Humane Society has been a part of NYC for over 100 years. Their mission has always been to protect animals in need whether it’s for illness, injury or homelessness. They got their start in 1904 protecting the city’s horses against abuse. As the years progressed, funds allowed The Humane Society to expand with free medical clinics and a small adoption center for cats and dogs. Fast forward to today, when it helps more than 38,000 animals annually, with that number continuously growing. Each animal’s quality of life is of the utmost importance with their physical and emotional needs taken care of daily. Whether it is daily play time, exercise time on the rooftop run, outdoor walks, inoculations, or veterinary care, to name a few, each dog’s and cat’s needs are met. At the Humane Society of New York, it is more than a shelter, it is home.

With operations across the Tri-State area, Bideawee is not just a shelter for stray pets — it’s an organization that cares for needy animals, helps seniors, and provides therapeutic initiatives for children. Founded 117 years ago, Bideawee and their amazing staff take incredible care of the animals at their facilities, and help provide any assistance (behavioral, medical, or otherwise) that they may need. The ultimate goal is to pair the animals with new, loving homes for the long term, while also offering the chance to foster pets for short times to give them a break from the shelter system. In addition to caring for animals, they launched one of America’s first animal-assisted therapy programs to bring the benefits of the human-animal bond to vulnerable populations, such as seniors or the disabled, which brings big smileys to the faces of those in the most need. They also offer a “Reading to Dogs Program” which allows children to find therapy and improve their reading skills with the help of some four-legged friends. If you’re looking to adopt, foster or volunteer, Bideawee is the place to go.
