Dubbed the “Queen of Soul Food,” Sylvie Woods, founded Sylvia’s Restaurant, located in Harlem, in 1962. From humble beginnings on a farm in South Carolina, Sylvia and her husband Herbert, made their way to NYC where she worked as a waitress at Johnson’s Luncheonette. Years of dedicated service and an entrepreneurial spirit did not go unnoticed. In 1962, the owner sold her the luncheonette, and the rest is history. Today, Syliva’s Restaurant remains a staple in the community and continues to support and give back to those in need. Sylvia Woods always made sure the people in need were fed, a tradition the restaurant continues to uphold. What was once a small establishment with only 15 stools and six booths, is now a family-owned enterprise, loved by locals as well as celebrities and prominent figures.
